Three Things I Love About Barre

I was just reading the Times Argus—gotta love the occasional relaxing Sunday afternoon when both girls are down for naps—and it made me think about some of the things I love about Barre.

Top ten lists are passé, so I’m not doing one.  But here are some things I love about Barre:

  1.  LACE (Local Agricultural and Community Exchange)—This is more than a café, more than a store, and more than a storefront.  The owner, Ariel Zevon, is a dynamo.  She’s made it her mission to reconnect people with locally sourced food, crafts, and people.  It’s also become a focal point for the community; a gathering place, and, I have to admit, it feels a little like the headquarters to the Resistance.  Plus, they have very good coffee, and my daughter loves the dried fruit cookies.
  2. Aldrich Public Library—I have a soft spot in my heart for libraries.  I go there more than I should, and I’m usually reluctant to buy books that I can get from the library.  Even when I occasionally rack up some late fees, it’s still a better deal.  This week, the Aldrich Public Library in Barre has hosted a wonderful art show featuring art by students at Barre City Elementary and Middle School.  Over 300 kids participated.  I’m no art critic, but simply exposing these kids to art, and to the display was worthwhile.
  3. It’s easy to park in downtown Barre.  Actually, it’s free to park right on Main Street.  All of the time.  Sometimes I can’t park directly in front of the store I want, but I can almost always find a spot nearby.  And, if by chance I can’t find the “pole position” spot, there’s always the big lot behind Main Street on Merchants Row.  They’re metered spots, but I think a quarter gets you a half hour.
